Firesign Design 11 December 2008

Independent Graphic Designer : Print + Web + Identity

Kris Travis established Firesign Design in 2005 after graduating from the University of Oregon with a BFA in Multimedia Design. After working in-house as a Print Designer for Icon Motosports for a little over two years, she left to commit full-time to Firesign Design. Kris has worked with a variety of NW clients on a range of print, web design, and identity projects, and loves how her job as a designer provides her the opportunity to experience something new and interesting everyday.

What are you up to?

I’m currently contracting full-time for Spot Color Studio in North Portland (and have done so for nearly a year now). I work on a variety of projects, from brochures and posters, to websites, to logos and packaging, and I love the cross-section of clients with whom we do business. The efficient, yet mellow office culture is just my speed; I don’t like to spin my wheels–I prefer to get things done quickly, calmly, and of the highest quality possible, of course!

Outside of Spot Color Studio, I’m regularly working on projects for the Portland Trail Blazers, and–when I have time–my own projects (which are oftentimes more craft-based than digital).

What do you do best?

I am an excellent communicator, and am skilled at translating clients’ ideas and goals into successful, creative designs. I love the challenge of logo design…it can be a very rewarding process (and one which relies heavily on clear communication!).

I’ve been told I am very easy to work with.

When did you first become interested in design?

When I was really young, I wanted to be a cartoonist. I’ve always loved to draw, and finally decided I might have better luck making a living in Graphic Design. As technology changes, design avenues and opportunities seem to grow exponentially, which is so exciting and promising to see as a young professional in the early stages of my career. I feel so lucky to love what I do…while I don’t love getting up early, it’s certainly not because I’m dreading going to work.

What are your long-term design goals?

While my original focus was print design, my interest in web design has really grown over the last few years, and I look forward to expanding my skill set within this ever-changing landscape. Generally speaking, I ultimately hope to take on more of a directorial role in design. But right now I’m still too much in love with the nitty-gritty hands-on work.

What are the best and worse parts of life as a freelancer?

Flexibility and flexibility.
